Coach Chris Tarello is going into his 2nd full season coaching girls distance at Cherokee High School. Under Tarello the Cherokee girls program finished an impressive 4th in the Couier Post Top 20 South Jersey Poll and 20th in the state according to the Newark Star Ledger during the XC season. During Spring the Cherokee girls finished ranked - 2nd in the state in the 4 x 1600 (21:24) 3rd in the 4 x 800 (9:34.13) and 6th in the Distance Medley (12:25.21) Prior to taking over the Cherokee program, Tarello spent two seasons at Sacred Heart High School in Vineland where he led Adrienne Alexander to two State Championships (indoor Group 1 mile and outdoor Parochial B 1600 (5:07)) and Tim Callinan to a Parochial B XC title and Group 1 3200 title. Tarello then moved to Shawnee High School where among other accomplishments coached Lauren Anders to a South Jersey Group 4 1600 Championship (5:09) and a year later Jenna Darcy to a Group 4 3200 meter State Championship (11:11 and 5:06 (2nd Group 4 1600)). As an athlete Tarello graduated Rider University with PR's of: 800 - 1:51.12 400 - 48.69 500 - 1:03.06 4 x 400 - 3:08.04 North East Conference Champion 800 M 8 Time All East Selection 4th Three years in a row at IC4A's 500 M Tarello is a Shawnee High School Graduate, and High School National Qualifier at 800 M (1:54.12) and finished 2nd in the Group 4 State Meet. Head Boys Coach, Steve Shaklee,is a USATF certified coach at Cherokee High School where his cross country teams have won the last four Group 4 State Championships. He was named the New Jersey Coach of the Year for 1998 and was South Jersey Coach of the Year in both 1990 and 1997. He has coached national scholastic meet qualifiers, several state champions and 5 state championship teams. He also coaches post-collegiate athletes in track and cross country. Coach Shaklee is currently a nationally ranked masters runner. Assistant Coach Chris Callinan. Callinan has a number of years under his belt coaching distance in both Philadelphia and New Jersey. A former Gloucester Catholic runner and graduate form Cabrini College where he competed as a distance runner. Callinan is still competeing as a post collegiate runner.
